When you saw our recently redecorated guest bedroom, many of you said how much you loved the newly painted black bed against the shiplap wall.  I've actually been thinking about painting this bed black for a few years.  I spent a small fortune when I bought it, so I had to really think about this.  Fortunately, I bought it a number of years ago and that's what made my decision much easier.

At the time I bought it I could have gotten it in a number of beautiful colors, but I thought I would play it safe and stick with a wood tone.  You can see this bed on Ethan Allen's website by clicking here.I was shocked to see how expensive it is now.  When I bought it, I think it cost about $900.

I would have loved to spray paint the bed, and if you're able to do so, I would highly recommend it.  This bed would be a bear to take apart and set up elsewhere to spray paint it, so we left it in the bedroom.  I don't like using spray paint indoors, so I did the next best thing and painted it with a brush.

First thing to do is lightly sand over the wood.  Then I painted one coat of Glidden Gripper Primerin grey .  Unfortunately, they only sell it in white now, but I had some leftover from a few years ago.  Grey is great to use under dark shades of paint.

After the primer dried, I painted withRustoleum Black Satin enamel paint.  I used this method a number of years ago for a hutch I painted in our previous house.  It looked and felt like a perfectly smooth professional finish and in the years we had it, it never scratched or chipped and held up beautifully.  You can see it here.

However, when I went to paint the first coat using a small foam roller, this is what happened!  I used that same method on the hutch and it turned out perfect, but I didn't like how this looked.  So I decided to use my good Purdy paint brush to paint the second coat with.

But before painting that second coat, I took and cut smaller pieces from a brown paper bag to lightly sand over what I had painted.  Trust me when I say it will make everything ultra smooth.  You can read more about this method here.

This is the headboard after I painted the second coat of paint.  I did NOT put any protective coating over the black paint.  The Rustoleum Black Satin Enamel is good and strong as it is and leaves a perfect finish.

We removed the bed bolt covers on the legs of the pencil posts prior to priming and painting, just as you would remove any other hardware.

I chose not to paint the inside of the bed, including where the information is about this Ethan Allen bed.
